Digitalisation is considered a driver of development, as is sustainable development. It is also seen as an essential tool for mobilising and channelling finance, fitting strategically into the framework of the Digital Finance Package. This contribution focuses on the need to provide a regulatory framework for digital innovation in the financial sector, with the aim of ensuring that as many people as possible can benefit from digitalisation; promoting open digital financial ecosystems, including through appropriate regulation to enable real competition; and to support the development and uptake of innovative digital financial products and services that can help to finance the development of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
