The essay analyses the emotion of disgust as understood and utilised in the artistic field by both the early twentieth-century avant-gardes and the neo-avant-gardes of the 1960s. In detail, the paper shows how these movements, by means of a political use of disgust, have operated in a subversive manner towards the art market, and, more generally, how they have countered the idea of the autonomy of the aesthetic fact originated by the rise to power of the bourgeoisie.
