The paper takes its cue from the recent edition of the Statutes in the vernacular of the Florentine Republic of 1355 to propose some considerations on the city’s statute law as an instrument of political and identity affirmation of municipal institutions. The essay highlights how the great Florentine law constitutes a veritable ‘monument’ of the local legal culture and underlines its significance above all as a source for the history of local society, institutions and language in the mid fourteenth century
