In this paper, I focus firstly on the thresholds of old age and on the data measuring aging in Italy and in Europe. Then I describe some novels with the old ages as background to understand the link between literature and some issues of demography, such as ageing in The old man and the sea. This link is the purpose of my book “Letteratura e demografia” (Salvini 2023), that describes the demographic topics and some novels I read and loved in a special way.
