Smith chart, even if born in the pre-computer era, is a key instrument to the electromagnetic engineer which is still of great value today since its graphical representation helps the designer's understanding of the devices and ease the design process. Yet, as for any design instrument it did not sprang abruptly from Smith's mind but underwent an evolution which lasted at least from 1931 to 1939 and which we will trace in this contribution.

Abstract

Smith chart, even if born in the pre-computer era, is a key instrument to the electromagnetic engineer which is still of great value today since its graphical representation helps the designer's understanding of the devices and ease the design process. Yet, as for any design instrument it did not sprang abruptly from Smith's mind but underwent an evolution which lasted at least from 1931 to 1939 and which we will trace in this contribution.
