Suspended halfway up in a landscape that UNESCO has defined as a World Heritage Site, the Via dell'Amore has been an internationally renowned tourist destination for decades, a symbol of a territory, that of the Cinque Terre, which is the joint fruit of the action geological and that of man. This equilibrium has undergone a crack over the last century due to poor care of the territory which has aggravated the processes of hydrogeological instability and erosion, up to the landslides of 2012 which forced the closure of the path. The essay presents the unpublished results of the hydro-geomorphological safety project aimed at the reopening of the Via dell'Amore with particular attention to the innovative approach that inspired it. The hydrogeological risk restoration and mitigation project was therefore fully conceived as a landscape project which, free from a mere mitigative-compensatory intent, is instead defined as a revealing action of the peculiar nature and sense of places. Starting from an in-depth interpretative analytical framework of the geological, geomorphological and landscape context of the places and of the evolutionary dynamics of the context both on a natural and social level, the project has adopted a transdisciplinary approach that has seen the combination of various methodologies (integrated geological and geomechanical study through the application of digital photogrammetry techniques, statistical analysis of the project blocks and 3D rockfall modelling, landscape characterization, etc.) for the precise definition of the interventions. The essay, enriching the knowledge of the erosion phenomena present on the edges of the Mediterranean in high coast contexts, presents one of the most iconic coastal landscapes of the peninsula, taking into account its recent transformative dynamics, the problems and impacts to which it is subject as well as the strategies planning, intervention and management in context of great landscape value and fragility.
