The paper gathers some thought on the concept and meaning of 'borders' starting from the history of the word itself, i.e. a reborrowing, since the French bordeure in turn has Germanic origins, and of the words used as synonyms. They all imply a concept movement, that is a coming-and-going, which is reflected by the wide range of semantic nuances these words developed within the same language and cross-linguistically.

Abstract

The paper gathers some thought on the concept and meaning of 'borders' starting from the history of the word itself, i.e. a reborrowing, since the French bordeure in turn has Germanic origins, and of the words used as synonyms. They all imply a concept movement, that is a coming-and-going, which is reflected by the wide range of semantic nuances these words developed within the same language and cross-linguistically.
