This paper intends to illustrate some conceptual assumptions and the results of studies and analyses on the relationship between interna- tional trade and migrant settlement, with particular regard to the Italian case. We first introduce some general qualifications on information and preference effects, recalling cultural, linguistic, and production factors that influence the relationship just mentioned. We continue by focusing on the Italian case and the so-called Made in Italy case, as exemplify- ing this complex of effects and factors. To this end, we will anticipate the results of some recent analyses conducted by the authors. Our results show that the presence of Italian migrant communities, the presence of Italian educational institutions and/or Italian teachers and the presence of Italian sections in primary and secondary schools at a regional level outside Italy are positively associated with the trade of Made in Italy. We will conclude with some considerations on the in- tersection between language policies and international trade policies.
