Die Erforschung der Geographie der Alten Welt ist eine interdisziplinäre Wissenschaft. Der Orbis Terrarum bietet Raum für Publikationen von Historikern, Philologen, Geographen und Archäologen. Dabei ist das inhaltliche Spektrum, das abgedeckt werden soll, bewusst breit angelegt: Geographisch-topographische Studien haben hier ebenso ihren Platz wie Untersuchungen zur Wechselwirkung zwischen Mensch und Landschaft sowie wissenschaftsgeschichtliche oder methodologische Arbeiten. The spectrum of content to be covered is deliberately broad: Geographical-topographical studies have their place here, as do investigations into the interaction between man and landscape as well as scientific-historical or methodological works. Die Beiträge dieser Ausgabe erstrecken sich chronologisch von der Welt Herodots bis in die römische Kaiserzeit. Inhaltliche Schwerpunkte liegen u.a. auf der Untersuchung von antiken Texten (z.B. Herodot, Polybios, Livius, Strabon, Cassius Dio), der Tabula Peutingeriana, antiker Wasserversorgung oder griechischer Regionalgeschichte. Der Band bietet zudem Studien zum römischen Straßennetz auf Sardinien sowie einen Forschungsbericht zu den Garamanten. Schließlich enthält der Orbis Terrarum einen umfangreichen Literaturteil mit Rezensionen von Neuerscheinungen zur historischen Geographie der Alten Welt. The content focuses on the examination of ancient texts (e.g. Herodotus, Polybios, Livy, Strabon, Cassius Dio), the Tabula Peutingeriana, ancient water supply or Greek regional history. The volume also includes studies on the Roman road network in Sardinia and a research report on the Garamantes. Finally, Orbis Terrarum contains an extensive literature section with reviews of new publications on the historical geography of the ancient world.
