The essay focuses on the novel The Clone, written in 1964 by Theodore Lockard Thomas and Kate Wilhelm, analyzing the literary representation of sewers and their crucial role in the relationship between the human subject and waste management. Furthermore, this article, starting from the definition of “toxic discourse” (Buell 1998), aims to place the novel in the context of publications that were influenced by Rachel Carson's Silent Spring (1962). Lastly, we intend to draw parallels with Stephen King's novel It to demonstrate the “architext function” of The Clone.
