Typha shuttleworthii is a species distributed in Central and Southern Europe, from France to Ukraine as well as Turkey and Iran but it may have been overlooked due to its resemblance to the better known Typha latifolia. It was firstly described from Switzerland based on samples provided by Robert James Shuttleworth, who was an English botanist and malacologist active in Bern from 1833 to 1866. The scarcity of information regarding the type specimen of Typha shuttleworthii and the existence of conflicting references in literature has led to the need of carrying out an investigation to trace its original material.
