The article focuses on Epistle to Cangrande: it analysis its transmission, and argues that – given what emerges from the text that quote it up to the 16th c. – Dante may have written the Epistle towards the end of his stay in Verona, but that he never sent it to the addressee. As the text seems to originate from an archetype highly corrupted and not intended for publication, the letter may not have been a forgery made in north-eastern Italy. In contrast, the study of the manuscripts demonstrates that dissemination began at Florence after Dante’s death, where the poet’s sons brought their father’s other writings, the Epistle among them.

Abstract
The article focuses on Epistle to Cangrande: it analysis its transmission, and argues that – given what emerges from the text that quote it up to the 16th c. – Dante may have written the Epistle towards the end of his stay in Verona, but that he never sent it to the addressee. As the text seems to originate from an archetype highly corrupted and not intended for publication, the letter may not have been a forgery made in north-eastern Italy. In contrast, the study of the manuscripts demonstrates that dissemination began at Florence after Dante’s death, where the poet’s sons brought their father’s other writings, the Epistle among them.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
