It is necessary, but not sufficient, to emphasise the subjective experience of patients in order to develop clinically useful transitional research programmes; openness to individual experience is equally important. It will therefore be necessary for translational studies to incorporate into their generalisable results a methodology that takes into account, not eliminates, individual differences.
