also known as ‘historical method’, and the monument itself represents the primary source to be questioned. To reconstruct the ‘analytical history of the monument’, the graphic survey remains one of the main tools of documen-tation capable of revealing numerous historical data such as metrological observations, rules of construction, design schemes, as well as the legibility of the building. These indicators convey the correct comprehension of the building and have to be investigated especially if the analysis precedes a restoration intervention whose purpose is to preserve and reveal the monument’s historical values. As an example of this modus operandi the paper shows the study of a medieval church in Armenia. Critical observations of metrological, technological, and design qualities have been undertaken to augment its cognitive status for conser-vation purposes.
