La Physique de la Beauté di Étienne Gabriel Morelly costituisce tutt’oggi un’opera minore ma ugualmente rappresentativa dell’eterogeneo panorama culturale della Francia della prima metà del XVIII secolo, percorso sia da spinte riformiste che dal persistere degli echi del Grand Siècle. La Physique, seppur edita nel 1748, appartiene per gusto al secolo precedente: oltre al recupero degli Entretiens sur la pluralité des mondes di Fontanelle, emerge infatti una spiccata predilezione per la pittura di Charles Le Brun e una evidente noncuranza per il nuovo scenario artistico del primo Settecento. The treatise entitled Physique de la Beauté by Étienne Gabriel Morelly still constitutes a minor work but equally representative of the heterogeneous cultural panorama of mid-18th century France, torn between reformist impulses and the persistent echoes of the Grand Siècle. The Physique, although published in 1748, belongs to the taste of the previous century: in addition to the references to Fontanelle's Entretiens sur la pluralité des mondes, a marked predilection emerges for the painting of Charles Le Brun and an evident disregard for the new artistic scenario of early 18th century.
