Information 1970: alcune novità sul lavoro di Giuseppe Penone

The article reconstructs for the first time the participation of the artist Giuseppe Penone in the landmark exhibition "Information", organize by Kynaston McShine at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1970. The artist's contribution ultimately consisted of four photographic collages which paved the way to a series of works known as "Rovesciare i propri occhi", which stand among the ones with which the artist's practice is mostly identified. The elaboration of such works resonated and anticipated some major interests in the new avant-garde emerging at the end of the 1960s. By establishing comparisons with American artist, the essay positions these works at the core of such tendency and sheds light of the transatlantic connections which played a key role in the international promotion of Italian art in the US around 1970, revolving around the newly raised trends of post-minimalist and conceptual art, and arte povera.
