The article underlines the twentieth-century history of social rights in Britain, exploring its development alongside freedoms and the democratic evolution of the legal system. This development was certainly pioneering compared to continental experiences. However, the construction of the collectivist model has not been paralleled by a clear constitutional enhancement of social rights. The contradiction will become more pronounced: the extremely gradual trajectory that promotes the conferring of an authentically legal status to the social action of the State historically tends, with paradoxical outcomes, to coexist with the revival of individualism and the crisis of the Welfare State.

Abstract
The article underlines the twentieth-century history of social rights in Britain, exploring its development alongside freedoms and the democratic evolution of the legal system. This development was certainly pioneering compared to continental experiences. However, the construction of the collectivist model has not been paralleled by a clear constitutional enhancement of social rights. The contradiction will become more pronounced: the extremely gradual trajectory that promotes the conferring of an authentically legal status to the social action of the State historically tends, with paradoxical outcomes, to coexist with the revival of individualism and the crisis of the Welfare State.I documenti in FLORE sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
