Recent archival research have revealed a facet of Giacomo Puccini as a keen and knowledgeable photographer. There are many possible interpretations of this heritage of shots and prints: from a new pathway for further biographical studies to a useful resource for tracing stylistic and aesthetic approaches. We would like to propose an interpretation that focuses on examples in which the fascination with the topological-spatial qualities of places observed and experienced emerges clearly, beyond any lyrical-intimist emphasis. Photographs in which the “geographical truth” is recorded in accordance with a morphological-compositional lexicon of the gaze made of distances and depths, intervals and rhythms, cadences and tone, whose correspondences and divergences with musical syntax remain to be investigated and deciphered.
