The field of document analysis is progressing very quickly in recent years. While at times it seems that each step is incremental, if looked at on the whole, significant progress can be seen. This special issue has been created to showcase some of the more significant recent steps forward. It is the fourth in a successful series that highlights papers that were delivered as a Journal Track at the International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition (ICDAR) 2024, held in Athens Greece.
