With the Unification of Italy the Palazzo Pubblico of Siena progressively regains its full function as the headquarters of municipal institutions, the source of the Italian autonomist spirit, and as a museum space, a treasure chest of the vocabulary of the national visual language. In the long works, civil powers and responsibilities, acute professional figures and various reactions from public opinion are intertwined. The architectural restoration is completed by the purist decoration, which involves the entire local pictorial school, and by the exhibition of the medieval Sienese art.
