Cryptostroma corticale in Italy: new reports of sooty bark of Acer pseudoplatanus and first outbreak on Acer campestre.

Viene riportata la manifestazione epidemica della malattia dell'acero nota come "corteccia fuligginosa" in diverse nuove località dell'area appenninica settentrionale. L'esposizione alle spore del fungo agente della malattia (Cryptostroma corticale) può causare gravi manifestazioni allergiche nelle persone sesibili. Vengono discusse le implicazioni dell'emergenza della malattia nell'area mediterranea per l'uso degli aceri nella forestazione urbana e la selezione di cultivar resistenti, in considerazione del rischio per la salute pubblica. / The epidemic occurrence of the maple disease known as ‘sooty bark’ in several new locations in the northern Apennine area is reported. Exposure to the spores of the disease agent, the fungus Cryptostroma corticale, can cause severe allergic manifestations in susceptible persons. The implications of the disease's emergence in the Mediterranean area for the use of maple trees in urban forestation and the selection of resistant cultivars are discussed, considering the risk to public health.
