AMPLIAMENTO DEL CIMITERO DI ESANATOGLIA(MC), 2023

Il Progetto di ampliamento del Cimitero di Esanatoglia, insediamento urbano che appartiene all’area marchigiana dell’alto maceratese, si inserisce all’interno di un percorso di ricerca progettuale iniziato nel 2010 con un primo ampliamento (progetto realizzato, vincitore del premio IN ARCH) e conclusosi nel 2023 con la progettazione della seconda addizione al Camposanto esistente. La nuova addizione, oggetto della ricerca, ha l’obiettivo di porsi in continuità tipologica, spaziale, formale con l’impianto originale ottocentesco e al contempo di esprimere, attraverso lo spazio contemporaneo, un ‘impianto in-fase, in itinere, in evoluzione ove l’architettura è concepita per processi anziché per oggetti, ove lo spazio contemporaneo diviene esito di una esibita processualità compositiva. Il progetto rappresenta un nuovo recinto quale addizione ai recinti che si sono articolati durante le diverse fasi evolutive dell’impianto originale. Negli anni ’80 del Novecento l’asse principale di sviluppo del Cimitero viene negato e distorto dalla realizzazione di un recinto, impostato su un asse disassato rispetto a quello longitudinale ottocentesco, generando di fatto una mutazione, impropria, del principio insediativo identitario del sito. Il nuovo intervento si sviluppa sull’asse longitudinale originale e riporta il visitatore a percorrere il camminamento lungo la traiettoria principale, storica, fondativa dell’impianto antico. Il nuovo recinto è una doppia U, una aperta verso valle, l’altra verso monte, posta a delimitare e proteggere una corte rettangolare costituita da un piazzale superiore e da una piazza impostata a una quota più bassa. Il nuovo spazio cimiteriale sembra non concludersi, rimanere aperto (in virtù del fatto che i due corpi di fabbrica ad U non si toccano) predisponendosi ad accettare nuovi successivi accrescimenti. Alla base dell’ideazione dello spazio vi è la coniugazione del tipo con il simbolo; il nuovo recinto ha l’impianto cruciforme e costituisce la testa di tutto il sistema, una croce stagliata sul territorio il cui corpo è rappresentato dall’asse mediano ottocentesco. Il metodo adottato per comporre il progetto si basa sul reiterare e alimentare le figure storiche dell’architettura antica presente in sito, identitaria del luogo e della sua specificità, e al contempo interpretarne la tipologia costruttiva, considerando il nuovo intervento come un “tassello” inserito nel processo di evoluzione del luogo. Il progetto è stato presentato al XXII Convegno nazionale “IDENTITA’ DELL’ARCHITETTURA ITALIANA” svoltosi a Firenze il 17-18/12/2024 presso il Salone Brunelleschi, al Museo degli Innocenti e al Convegno nazionale “LA CITTA’ E IL SUO DOPPIO: IL CIMITERO” svoltosi a Oristano il 25/11/2023 presso l’Auditorium dell’Hospitalis Sant’Antoni. Il progetto è stato pubblicato nel Catalogo del Convegno dal titolo IDELL’ARCHITETTURA ITALIANA 2024 e nella rivista “ARISTANA. CULTURE E ARCHITETTURE DEL MEDITERRANEO”, Camelia Edizioni, Oristano. The expansion project of the Esanatoglia Cemetery, an urban settlement that belongs to the Marche area of the upper Macerata area, is part of a design research path that began in 2010 with a first expansion (realized project, winner of the IN-ARCH award) and concluded in 2023 with the design of the second addition to the existing Camposanto. The new addition, the object of the research, has the objective of placing itself in typological, spatial, formal continuity with the original nineteenth-century system and at the same time of expressing, through contemporary space, an 'in-phase, in itinere, in evolution system where architecture is conceived for processes rather than objects, where contemporary space becomes the result of an exhibited compositional process. The project represents a new enclosure as an addition to the enclosures that were articulated during the various evolutionary phases of the original system. In the 1980s, the main axis of development of the Cemetery was denied and distorted by the construction of an enclosure, set on an axis offset from the longitudinal axis (1800), effectively generating an improper mutation of the identity of the site’s settlement principle. The new intervention develops on the original longitudinal axis and brings the visitor back to walk along the main, historical, founding trajectory of the ancient system. The new enclosure is a double U, one open towards the valley, the other towards the mountain, placed to delimit and protect a rectangular courtyard consisting of an upper square and a square set at a lower level. The new cemetery space seems to never end, to remain open (by virtue of the fact that the two U-shaped buildings do not touch each other) predisposing itself to accept new subsequent additions. The basis of the conception of the space is the conjugation of the type with the symbol; the new enclosure has a cruciform layout and constitutes the head of the entire system, a cross silhouetted on the territory whose body is represented by the nineteenth-century median axis. The method adopted to compose the project is based on reiterating and nourishing the historical figures of the ancient architecture present on site, identifying the place and its specificity, and at the same time interpreting its construction typology, considering the new intervention as a "piece" inserted in the process of evolution of the place.
