The study focuses on the obelisk and tomb of Antinous in Rome, examining their historical and topographical context. The obelisk, currently located on the Pincian Hill, has sparked debates about its original location and its connection to the tomb of Antinous. While late antique sources suggest that the tomb was in Antinoupolis, Egypt, new interpretations of the hieroglyphic inscriptions suggest that the obelisk may have been located within the Horti of Domitia, near Hadrian's Mausoleum. This suggests a commemorative function as a cenotaph in Rome, distinct from the actual tomb at Antinoupolis. The analysis integrates literary and archaeological evidence to propose a comprehensive understanding of the funerary and commemorative landscape associated with Antinous during Hadrian's reign.
