AUGUSTINIANISM AND GENDER: WOMEN AND HOLINESS ACCORDING TO SOME FOURTEENTH-CENTURY HERMIT FRIARS OF SAINT AUGUSTINE/ AGUSTINIANISMO Y GÉNERO: MUJERES Y SANTIDAD SEGÚN ALGUNOS FRAILES ERMITAÑOS DE SAN AGUSTÍN DEL SIGLO XIV

Abstract: The paper focuses on female taxonomy in the texts written by Augustinian friars in the fourteenth century, a very important period for the Order’s identity. The analysis focusses on the Liber Vitas Fratrum and other pastoral and spiritual works, with special attention to those by Simone da Cascia and Girolamo da Siena. In these works, the holiness of women coincided with that of the apostolic age; or that of the time after the Last Judgement. Such holiness was possible as it was defined by the Regula Augustini, the Augustinian spiritual father’s guidance. The Augustinian perspective is, therefore, not to be found in consideration of the female gender as such but rather in the centrality of Scripture and conformity to Christ for women as well as men. El trabajo se centra en la taxonomía femenina en los textos escritos por frailes agustinos en el siglo XIV, un periodo muy importante para la identidad de la orden. El análisis se centra en el Liber Vitas Fratrum y otras obras pastorales y espirituales, con especial atención en las de Simone da Cascia y Girolamo da Siena. En estas obras, la santidad de la mujer coincidía con la de la época apostólica o la del tiempo posterior al Juicio Final. Dicha santidad era posible tal y como la definía la Regula Augustini, la guía del padre espiritual agustino. Por tanto, la perspectiva agustiniana no se encuentra en la consideración del género femenino como tal, sino más bien en la centralidad de la Escritura y la conformidad con Cristo tanto para las mujeres como para los hombres.
