In Italy, the area of reforestations amounts to approximately half a million hectares, a large part of which is dominated by conifers. In recent decades, problems have emerged related to the potential instability of these stands, often caused by lack of silvicultural management. This communication summarizes the results of a study on silvicultural management for the enhancement of Austrian pine and Corsican pine reforestations and Douglas fir plantations in Italy. Using data from the national forest inventory and from experimental plots, different thinning regimes were simulated by the model 3D-CMCC-FEM to determine intensity and frequency of such interventions. The results were used to estimate the provision of some ecosystem services and quantify their economic value. An index was also developed to provide a reference for quantifying stand density for wood production. On the basis of the results this communication finally provides operational indications for the silvicultural management of Austrian and Corsican pine reforestations and Douglas fir plantations.
