Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms. Current clinical assessments rely on rating scales like the Hoehn Yahr scale and the Movement Disorder Society-Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS), but they have limitations such as variability and time-consuming administration. Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) offer promising prospects for objective motor assessment in PD. Despite this, widespread adoption requires further validation and integration into clinical practice. The study aims are to evaluate the reliability and validity of measurements recorded with a set of IMUs while performing tasks from Section III of the MDS-UPDRS in PD patients. The study will be performed at the General Rehabilitation Organizational Structure of the University of Florence located within the IRCCS Fondazione Don Gnocchi (FDG), Florence, Italy. At least 50 participants will be recruited who will wear IMUs and undergo tasks selected from Section III of the MDS-UPDRS. At baseline (T0) the first assessor will apply the sensors, and as the subject performs the assessments, an expert clinician will assign corresponding scores. At T1 another examiner will place the sensors and record the data. At T2 the first examiner will repeat the assessments, including sensor placement and data recording. IMUs have the potential to improve the quality of care for PD patients. Implementing studies that explore their effectiveness in clinical settings is essential for advancing our understanding of their capabilities and optimizing their use in patient care.

Abstract
Implementing studies that explore their effectiveness in clinical settings is essential for advancing our understanding of their capabilities and optimizing their use in patient care.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
