In Sicilia le nevicate sono rare. Sulla traduzione del Giorno della civetta in finlandese

Le opere di Leonardo Sciascia non hanno ottenuto molta popolarità in Finlandia. "Il giorno della civetta" e altri romanzi sono stati tradotti a metà degli anni '80 del Novecento e non sono stati ben accolti all'epoca, né nei decenni successivi. È interessante analizzare la traduzione finlandese di questo romanzo per apprezzare la complessa distanza culturale tra Finlandia e Sicilia, una complessità condivisa con altri romanzi tradotti in contesti linguistici e culturali distanti da quello di Sciascia, per mettere in evidenza le difficoltà apparentemente insormontabili per il traduttore, a cui si unisce l'eccezionale motivazione a creare soluzioni nuove e innovative. *** Leonardo Sciascia’s works did not gain much popularity in Finland. The Day of the Owl and some of his other novels were translated in the mid 1980s and were not well-received at the time, nor in the following decades. It is interesting to analyse the Finnish translation of this novel to appreciate the complex cultural distance between Finland and Sicily – a complexity shared with other novels translated in linguistic and cultural contexts distant from Sciascia’s own – both to see the apparently insurmountable difficulties for the translator and the exceptional motivation to create new and innovative solutions.
