This paper presents the theoretical analysis the experimental evaluation of a indoor positioning system based on switched beam antenna designed to operate at 2.45 GHz.The key of the real-time positioning service is the space and frequency division multiple access concept, which is exploited in a legacy IEEE 802.11 network. The position estimation concept is based on the maximum likelihood, meaning the comparison of received signal strength indicator with the expected signal levels, from any possible position and without any prior calibration stage, to estimate the actual position.Experimental data demonstrates the system performance in a 2D scenario within an area of 49 m2. a mean error of 29 cm is observed, while the 90th percentile of the cumulative error distribution is 53 cm and the error density is below 0.2%.

Abstract
This paper presents the theoretical analysis the experimental evaluation of a indoor positioning system based on switched beam antenna designed to operate at 2.45 GHz.The key of the real-time positioning service is the space and frequency division multiple access concept, which is exploited in a legacy IEEE 802.11 network. The position estimation concept is based on the maximum likelihood, meaning the comparison of received signal strength indicator with the expected signal levels, from any possible position and without any prior calibration stage, to estimate the actual position.Experimental data demonstrates the system performance in a 2D scenario within an area of 49 m2. a mean error of 29 cm is observed, while the 90th percentile of the cumulative error distribution is 53 cm and the error density is below 0.2%.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
