This article offers an original interpretation of Horace, carm. 4, 10 and puts forward new arguments in defence of the transmitted pluma at line 2. A hitherto unnoticed echo of Horace’s ode in the epilogue of the Narcissus episode in the third book of Ovid’s Metamorphoses (491-501) is also pointed out.
