Heinrich Heine's Götter-im-Exil-motif has the merit of inaugurating not only an extensive literary refounding of ancient paganism, but also a new historical-morphological field of study that will serve as the basis for the nascent Kulturwissenschaft. That Warburg's studies on the survival of pagan antiquity are inspired by Heine has been pointed out by critics, but a closer comparative analysis is still lacking. The article aims to highlight the affinities and convergences that link Heine's Goddess in exile and Warburg's Nymph from a mythological, iconological and anthropological point of view, paying particular attention to the recurrence and significance of motion and dance.
