The Belgian Francophone reception of Dante—marked more by rewritings and adaptations than by direct trans- lations—raises a fundamental theoretical question: can the translator be considered an author? This question is complicated by the fact that Belgian translators of- ten rework existing French translations, resulting in a translation practice that is interlinguistic, interdiscursive, and inherently plural. This article analyzes the work of several Belgian translators (Lalaing, Poirier, Vivier, Cliff, and the unpublished, ongoing project by Jean-Philippe Toussaint) to demonstrate how the act of translation can embody genuine forms of authorship.
