The volume Dante in Francophone Belgium offers a groundbreaking exploration of Dante’s reception in the French-speaking cultural sphere of Belgium, from the 19th century to the present day. Rather than being marked by direct and canonical translations, this reception is characterized by a rich constellation of rewritings, adaptations, critical appropriations, literary tributes, and even cinematic and artistic reinterpretations. Through a series of studies devoted to writers, translators, artists, and intellectuals—ranging from figures such as Ernest de Laminne, André Gide, Marie Delcourt, and Jean-Philippe Toussaint to lesser-known or unfinished projects—the volume examines how Dante’s work has circulated, been reread, and reimagined in Francophone Belgium. Far from a passive reception, this journey highlights active and often hybrid forms of appropriation, which reveal both the vitality of Dante’s legacy and the unique character of the Belgian context.
