This project focuses on enhancing the accessibility and visibility of the Franciscan complex of La Verna, with particular attention to the collection of glazed terracotta artworks (robbiane) by the Della Robbia family. By developing a user-friendly digital platform, the initiative aims to offer remote and immersive access to the site, allowing users to explore its spaces and artworks via computers, tablets, or smartphones. The platform integrates virtual tours with 3D reconstructions and informative content on the robbiane’s history, technique, and iconography, thereby enriching the visitor experience both remotely and in situ. The convent of La Verna, founded by Saint Francis in the 13th century and expanded through Florentine patronage, houses the most extensive and cohesive corpus of works by Andrea della Robbia and his workshop. These pieces, originally designed for specific chapels within the sanctuary, are notable for their refined execution and the durability of glazed terracotta in the mountain setting. However, the current physical limitations of the site often hinder visibility and interpretation of these works. Since 2013, a collaborative research effort has been undertaken to digitally document the site and its artworks in 3D, involving academic institutions and the Franciscan friars. This scientific and methodological approach led to the creation of a digital survey of the entire complex. The resulting platform combines high-quality panoramic imagery and spatial data to provide an emotionally engaging and informative experience. Easily accessible via QR code and compatible with various communication systems, this tool promotes sustainable digital tourism and facilitates broader public engagement with cultural heritage. The project exemplifies how digital technologies can support heritage preservation, education, and accessibility.
