Focusing on "Il corsaro e ‘le philosophe’" by Francesco Serpico, the paper examines the phenomenon of Barbary privateers in the 18th century, with particular reference to their impact on the Kingdom of Naples. Through an in-depth study of the historical sources, the author shows how this phenomenon had a profound impact on political institutions and diplomatic strategies, involving doctrine in a debate that spanned the entire Age of Enlightenment. In this context, the figure of the Barbary corsair came to reflect a state of profound cultural regression and permanent hostility, and was used as a legitimising device for European imperialism. (
