The restoration of Florence’s and other world-class state collections constituted a milestone in the cathartic rebuilding of the Italian nation after Fascism. Yet, this often happened at the expenses of Jewish citizens and ex-colonial subjects, whose dispossession fell into oblivion at least until the 1960s – and often until the late 1980s. Even when the subject of fascist-looted art did come up, its treatment was exemplary of Italy’s lopsided processing of its involvement in the Holocaust.
