We present an experimental characterization aimed at clarifying whether circularly polarized antennas have a peculiar behavior, compared to linearly polarized antennas, in terms of power received in case of extreme but controlled multipath. The latter is reproduced by field generation in a well-stirred reverberation chamber. It is concluded that the observed difference in received power is simply due to the different radiation efficiency of the linearly and circularly polarized antennas that we used in experiments. No advantage deriving from the use of a circularly polarized antenna in respect to extreme multipath was identified.

Abstract

We present an experimental characterization aimed at clarifying whether circularly polarized antennas have a peculiar behavior, compared to linearly polarized antennas, in terms of power received in case of extreme but controlled multipath. The latter is reproduced by field generation in a well-stirred reverberation chamber. It is concluded that the observed difference in received power is simply due to the different radiation efficiency of the linearly and circularly polarized antennas that we used in experiments. No advantage deriving from the use of a circularly polarized antenna in respect to extreme multipath was identified.
