The citu of Gubbio, located in north-central Italy in the region of Umbria, is one of the finest and most well-preserved Italian historic settlements. The earthquake of 29th april 1984 demonstrated the importance of protecting the entire artistic heritage of the town and, in particular, the appropriateness of conducting an extensive survey to asses the seismic risk of ordinary buildings which are not earthquake-resistant. The analyses carried out and the principal results obtained are described.
