Un’indagine sull’impiego delle decorazioni punzonate nelle opere su tavola di Allegretto Nuzi

This paper explores Allegretto Nuzi’s use of punched decoration in gold ground panels. In the mid-fourteenth century, Nuzi stood out for his remarkable skill and mastery in conceiving and making decorations on gold grounds. Here the focus is mainly on combined punches, or patterns made up of several individual punches to form a new and original design, devised by the painter. The identification of such decorative elements is a means toof reviewing the painter’s chronology, based on the presence or absence of certain, particularly significant punches. The principalmain result of this work has been the development of a method for studying fourteenth-century panels that takes into consideration style and iconography as well as the material features of punched decoration.
