Thearticleexaminestheapplicationofartificialintelligence(AI)in“DigitalTwin”modelstoenhanceurbandecision-makingprocesses.Theauthorsconsiderthepotentialofdigitaltwins,whicharevirtualreplicasofphysicalsystems,tooptimisetheplanningandmanagementofsmartcities.AI,whenintegratedintodigitaltwins,enablespredictions,thesimulationandreal-timemonitoringofcomplexfunctionssuchastraffic,energyconsumption,andsocialbehaviours,establishingthebasisformoreinformedandtimelydecisions.Thedigitaltwinconceptwasoriginallyappliedtoindustrialmanufacturingandhasexpandedtourbandesign.Aneffectivedigitaltwinmustrepresentphysicalrealityandrelatedprocesses,incorporatingup-to-datedataandusingadvancedAImodelsforpredictionsandsimulations.Thisapproachallowsformoreefficientandresilienturbanmanagement,improvingresponsivenesstounexpectedeventsandfacilitatinglong-termstrategicplanning.TheSnap4Cityplatformispresentedasanexampleofimplementingdigitaltwinsforsmartcities.Itintegratesdatafromdifferentsources,supportsreal-timeanalysisandvisualisation,andenablesAI-basedoperationalandstrategicmanagement.Snap4Cityshowssignificantbenefitsforpublicadministrations,improvingtheefficiencyofurbanservicesandpromotingsustainabilityandthewell-beingofcitizens.
