The essay aims at outlining Filippo Vassalli's activity and ideas during the years of democratic transition in Italy. By investigating his commitment in the defence of several Senators, who lost their parliamentary charge due to the purge launched after the fall of fascism in the middle 1940s, some aspects of Vassalli's thought in that historical circumstance are pointed out, concerning the ways by which the egression from the regime was conducted, the duties and possibilities of law and jurists in such a transition, and the meaning of legal knowledge within a historical phase implicating a new relationship between law and politics.
