Batteries are a key element for the development of future transportation systems. In this work attention is focused on generation of embedded models for battery testing and simulation of battery management systems for railway applications. In railway applications batteries play a key role as storage for battery-operated rolling stock. However, Batteries are also fundamental in hybrid systems, where they play a fundamental role for a proper management of the primary power source. Finally, batteries are employed as backup sources for auxiliaries or to improve the energy management of the railway infrastructure. In this work, attention is focused on the application of traction of rolling stock, with a particular attention on tools that should be useful for the fast prototyping of RT models for scaled HIL testing. Scaling is a quite mandatory choice considering the size of railway systems, so in this work, particular attention is also dedicated to criteria, tools and models that should lead to a more reasoned and optimized application of scaled testing.
