The field of addictive behaviors has been challenged by the emergence of non-substance-related compulsive behaviors. Although the mental health problems associated with some forms of compulsion to engage in a rewarding non-substance-related behavior are no longer debatable, several ongoing controversies reveal that scientific consensus regarding the conceptualization, diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of these behaviors has yet to emerge. This special issue addresses mental disorders already included in the diagnostic systems (i.e., gambling disorder and gaming disorder), but also potential behavioral addictions that are not recognized as primary mental disorders to date (e.g., compulsive shopping, problematic use of social media). This special issue includes empirical, theoretical papers, perspective and conceptual/discussion papers
