This paper briefly retraces the origins of toponymic standardization activities in Italy, illustrates the rules regarding the toponymy of Italy's historical linguistic minorities, according to Law No. 482 of December 15, 1999, those regarding the national toponymic authority, the procedures for standardizing geographical names, and the structure of the first Italian toponymic database.
