The need to organise the institutions responsible for safeguarding the architectural and artistic heritage has always been a central issue in Italy. Since before national unity, the individual states organised institutions and organs to attempt to offer a solution to the question of protecting their historical and artistic heritage. Tuscany has always been an example of far-sightedness, ever since the Grand Duchy period, providing itself with peripheral supervisory bodies whose regulations were the inspiration for the organisation of the national heritage protection service. Against this backdrop, from the 1890s until the 1930s, Giuseppe Castellucci carried out his career in the service of the Regional Office for the Conservation of Monuments in Tuscany. During these years, the architect carried out numerous restoration projects in Tuscany, particularly between Florence and Arezzo, contributing incisively to the formation of the image of the cities that has come down to us today.
