This article analyses the segmentation marks found in the seven surviving fully autograph manuscripts of Calderón de la Barca, proposing a taxonomy of these marks and examining their functions in the articulation of the dramatic text. The analysis shows that the playwright systematically signals changes of cuadro and other moments of particular narrative and scenic relevance. The results are related to the segmentation criteria adopted by modern scholarship, especially the eclectic method employed in the Calderón Digital database.

Abstract

This article analyses the segmentation marks found in the seven surviving fully autograph manuscripts of Calderón de la Barca, proposing a taxonomy of these marks and examining their functions in the articulation of the dramatic text. The analysis shows that the playwright systematically signals changes of cuadro and other moments of particular narrative and scenic relevance. The results are related to the segmentation criteria adopted by modern scholarship, especially the eclectic method employed in the Calderón Digital database.
