The first issue of the American Journal of Hematology (AJH) was published in 1976 under the founding editor, Ananda S. Prasad, MD, PhD (1928–2022), with its primary purpose being “serving the needs of the practicing hematologist”; in so doing, AJH joined BLOOD as one of the only two hematology journals at the time [1]. Dr. Prasad passed the baton to the current editor- in- chief, Carlo Brugnara, MD, in 2006 [2–4]. Under Dr. Brugnara's leadership, the journal's impact factor has steadily risen from 1.88 in 2006 to over 10.0 for the last 3 years. Throughout the years, AJH has remained true to its original form by focusing on work that is clinically relevant but also encompassing translational research. Beginning in 2011, the journal has added, to its repertoire, a highly informative and practice- focused series of “Annual Clinical Updates in Hematological Malignancies” [4]. In the last 5 years alone, several of these annual clinical updates have amassed over 200 citations, each [5–10], and some have garnered over 80 000 downloads in their first 2 years of publication [11, 12]. Other successful and clinically relevant sections of the journal include “Critical Reviews,” “Morphology Update,” “Images in Hematology,” “Clinical Problem Solving,” and “Test of the Month.”
