Mapping Musica Life in Modern Urban Spaces

Questo special issue di “Sound Stage Screen” raccoglie due Reflections, che prospettano due diverse metodologie di indagine sul rapporto tra spazi urbani e attività musicali; cinque Articoli, che presentano altrettanti casi di studio, dalla Madrid settecentesca ‘descritta’ da Boccherini alla New York City di Julius Eastman, la cui musica riconfigura la tradizionale divisione tra Uptown e Downtown; due progetti di ricerca, concernenti rispettivamente gli spazi concertistici nella Vienna di primo Ottocento e il rapporto musica-spazi urbani nelle principali città dell’Italia postunitaria. This special issue of Sound Stage Screen brings together two Reflections, which advance distinct methodological perspectives on the study of the relationship between urban spaces and musical practices; five Articles, each devoted to a specific case study, ranging from eighteenth-century Madrid as “represented” through Boccherini’s music to New York City in the work of Julius Eastman, whose compositions challenge and reconfigure the conventional distinction between Uptown and Downtown; and, finally, two research projects, focusing respectively on concert venues in early nineteenth-century Vienna and on the interplay between music and urban space in the principal cities of post-Unification Italy.
