The purpose of this study is to investigate a specific type of lieu de mémoire. The article entails an analysis of several case studies of shrines, monuments, and museums dedica¬ted to the soldiers fallen in the Italian colonies, constructed during the Republican era. The processes of erection of these sites of memory are analysed, emphasizing the roles played by various actors such as designers and architects, ministries and politicians, as well as associations of veterans. Lastly, the gap between the initial projects and what was implemented will be highlighted, as well as how these same places exhibit a stratification of memories within them.
