This contribution aims to present the current practice of phisician-assisted suicide (PAS) in Italy, with a specific focus on the experience of the Emilia-Romagna region, the first Italian region to implement specific regulations to govern PAS procedures. After describing the current italian regulatory approach surronding end-of-life issues and PAS, we’ll describe the procedures established at the regional level to manage patients’ PAS requests. The role of the Regional Clinical Ethics Committee (COREC), whose mandate includes the ethical assessment of PAS applications, will be examined in depth. We highlight the lessons learned over nearly two years of activity and outline future developments aimed at fostering a public debate and a professional practice increasingly grounded in ethical experience.
