Esporre i principi della Carta: la mostra di palazzo Grassi a Venezia dalle carte di Piero Sanpaolesi

From 25 May to 25 June 1964, the 2nd International Exhibition of Monumental Restoration was held in the historic Palazzo Grassi in Venice. This event accompanied the 2nd International Congress of Monumental Architects and Technicians, which gave rise to the International Charter on the Conservation and Restoration of Monuments and Sites, better known as the Venice Charter. Piero Gazzola, who chaired the Organising Committee of the conference, called Piero Sanpaolesi to direct the exhibition. Through the study of the letters exchanged between these two protagonists of 20th-century restoration, it is possible to reconstruct and clarify the events that led to the success of the Venetian conference. The cultural debate that took place in Venice in 1964, around the discipline of restoration and conservation, of the world’s cultural heritage, allowed the development of heritage protection tools that remain highly topical today.
